FAQ🤔

Castings

How do I use worm castings? Using worm castings is simple! Just mix them into your garden soil or use them as a top dressing around your plants. They're safe to use on all types of plants, from flowers to vegetables.

Are worm castings safe for my pets and children? Absolutely! Worm castings are organic and safe for your pets and kids. They contain no harmful chemicals, pesticides, or odors.

Will worms invade my garden? You won't usually find worms in the castings we provide. These are the end-product of worm digestion, and the worms themselves remain in their bins. If you purchase our outdoor blend, you may find that some of the worm cocoons hatch into baby worms but worm colonies typically don't migrate very far so you don't have to worry about an infestation.

Worms

How fast does a worm population expand?  Depends on their conditions. In ideal temperatures, moisture levels, pH and food availability, red wigglers can produce 3 cocoons a week, each containing 1-5 worms. These worm hatchlings will break out of their cocoons in 3 to 5 weeks after which they will reach sexual maturity within 6 or 7 weeks.

Are worms invasive in North America? It's not that simple. It is believed that native North American worms were wiped out during the last ice age, resulting in an ecosystem that has since developed without them. However, in North America today there are more than 308 earthworm species which have mostly been introduced from South America and Europe via vehicles and the shipment of organic materials. Many of these worms pose threats to local ecosystems. Notably, the Asian Jumping Worm is severely impacting North American forests by consuming the leaf litter that would normally nurture a diverse range of native plants, fungi, and insects. Conversely, common garden worms such as red wigglers and nightcrawlers, though also largely non-native, have not been linked to similar ecological damage across the continent. In order to be safe, the Canadian government recommends practices like disposing of worms in locations where there are already worms present to stop the spread and cleaning your tires when you go to farms, camping locations and other hotbeds for worms.
