Caring For Lettuce Plants

Lettuce is famously easy to grow, keep their soil well-watered, especially on arid weeks, and support growth with worm castings or compost.
You can harvest baby lettuce for salads and garnishes, or wait till the plant grows to 12" to harvest a full head.
Overcrowded lettuce plants feel like a green bouquet but come with many concerns. If your lettuce plants are too close together, they retain lots of moisture and fight each other for sunlight and nutrients which could lead to pests or disease. Trim lettuce plants so they are 6 -inches apart in order to have them thrive.
In the hot summer sun, lettuce can bolt (produce a flower at the end of it's life cycle), when that happens, leaves become extremely bitter as more and more nutrients are transferred to the flower. Consider moving your plant indoors to a well-lit area or finding a shaded spot under a tree to help dissipate some heat.
Also consider, storing it indoors in the winter, or contact us and ask about overwintering your plants and returning them in the Spring
