Caring for Pepper Plants
🌶️Grow your own pepper plants with our Patio Pails!🫑
Pepper plants are drought-resistant plants that love direct sunlight. They are prone to overwatering, so if you're keeping them outdoors, it's best to let the natural rain cycles provide them with ample water unless it's a hot and arid few weeks, in which case you should move your plants to a shaded area to help them keep cool. Our patio pails have great drainage but also retain moisture for long periods due to the mix of worm castings, wood mulch, and potting soil. Pepper plants can also be prone to nutrient burn when they have too much access to fertilizer, so it's typically unnecessary to fertilize them.
With multiple peppers in a container, spacing becomes very important. Pepper plants compete for nutrients and sunlight so they mature most effectively when they are at least 7 inches away from the nearest plant.
Having them closer together would make for a bushier looking container of peppers but may result in limited air circulation which can help pests thrive.
Peppers suffer in cold weather, so consider moving them indoors to a bright and sunny spot or contacting us to overwinter your plants and give them back to you in the spring.
As peppers grow taller, they may need support through staking to maintain their vertical growth and support the weight of their fruits. Periodically prune the lowest-hanging leaves of the plant. Ensure your bottom-most leaf is 6-8" off the ground.
When peppers are brightly colored and plump, they are ready to harvest; you can simply pluck them off the plant
